My town: Kumasi

I’ve started a small series of posts on the theme My Town based on places I’ve lived around the world in which I post images that tell that town’s story, not necessarily what you see in tourist brochures. Living is anything over 4 months…for me. Some of these photos were taken by a friend and former volunteer, Tina. Some were by me. My photos aren’t too crash hot, but Tina’s are fantastic. So welcome to Kumasi:

Outside Kejetia, Kumasi

If you arrive in Kumasi by tro, there’s a strong chance you’ll land somewhere near Kejetia station. This photo is from the road on the Adom side of the station, a path I once trod often.

And this is the sprawling Kejetia tro station itself.

Culture Centre Kumasi

Around School, Kumasi

This is me walking to school in Kumasi where I was volunteering in 2005/06. My first impressions of Kumasi were of chaos and red dirt and that’s the vision I still have. But I like much more than I did in the beginning.

  1. Hi. I am off to Kumasi in mid-March as part of a group of headteachers and teachers from Essex who are making links with schools in Ghana. I have enjoyed your guide, both sample and full version and am looking forward to my trip. Have been to North Africa quite a lot but only a short holiday in the Gambia (which I loved) in West Africa. Any tips? Is it as hot as it seems on the BBC weather site? By the way, thanks for the guide – seems excellent.

  2. Hi Anny and Peter. Thanks for the compliments!
It is very hot right now in the northern half of Ghana. We freeze drinks the night before and get through the day by “drinking” frozen tea and water. So certainly wear light cotton clothing. Long pants to protect you from the sun and light T-shirts are best. Girls often bring light gypsy skirts or the like too. Lots of sun tan lotion too–SPF 30 and above. Let me know if you have more questions.
    Best,
    Gayle.

  3. Kumasi is a fabulous town! Don’t miss Kumasi Central Market also known as Kejetia Market-reputed to be the largest outdoor market in West Africa.
If you are looking for a moderately priced upmarket B &B reviewed as “Easily the nicest place to stay in Kumasi” then check out Four Villages Inn

  4. Thanks Chris. I absolutely agree on 4 Villages! It’s in our Guide to Ghana as top recommendation for Kumasi. Also on the Central Market though that scared the wits out of me in the beginning. Very much a must see.

  5. Hi Anny,
Thanks so much! We try to get it right and your feedback helps. Keep checking back as we’ll add some inspiring stories soon.

  6. Hi Gayle, you have a nice overview of Ashanti Region in some of your posts. We wish you could award us with a few reviews of hotels and restaurants on the MyGardenCity.com platform for Ashanti Region. You can also link your blogs there. Signup takes less than 20 seconds. Thank you, Kwame
